Knuth–Stolarsky lower bound for addition chains

Submit a result

Let $\ell(n)$ be the length of a shortest addition chain for $n$, with $\ell(1) = 0$, and let $\nu(n)$ be the number of ones in the binary expansion of $n$. The inequality below holds for every $n$ with $\ell(n) - \lfloor \log_2 n \rfloor \le 3$, the last of these cases being Thurber's, and Schönhage proved $\ell(n) \ge \log_2 n + \log_2 \nu(n) - 2.13$.

Problem. Is $$\ell(n) \ge \lfloor \log_2 n \rfloor + \lceil \log_2 \nu(n) \rceil$$ for every $n \ge 1$?
