Lieb's permanental dominance conjecture

Submit a result

For a subgroup $G$ of $S_n$ and the character $\chi$ of a nonzero finite-dimensional complex representation of $G$, the normalised generalised matrix function of $A = (a_{ij}) \in \mathbb{C}^{n \times n}$ is $$f_\chi(A) = \frac{1}{\chi(e)} \sum_{\sigma \in G} \chi(\sigma) \prod_{i=1}^n a_{i \sigma(i)},$$ which is real for Hermitian $A$. The determinant, the permanent and the normalised immanants are of this form. The stronger permanent-on-top conjecture is false (Shchesnovich).

Problem. Is $f_\chi(A) \le \operatorname{per}(A)$ for every $n \ge 1$, every Hermitian positive semidefinite $A \in \mathbb{C}^{n \times n}$, every subgroup $G$ of $S_n$ and every such $\chi$?
