Deterministic regularization of the nonsymmetric eigenproblem

Submit a result

For $M \in \mathbb{C}^{n \times n}$ with simple spectrum let $$\operatorname{gap}(M) = \min_{i \ne j} |\lambda_i(M) - \lambda_j(M)|, \qquad \kappa_V(M) = \inf_{M = VDV^{-1},\ D \text{ diagonal}} \|V\|_2 \|V^{-1}\|_2.$$ Banks, Garza-Vargas, Kulkarni and Srivastava showed that if $\|A\|_2 \le 1$, $0 < \gamma < 1/2$ and $G$ has independent complex Gaussian entries of mean $0$ and variance $1/n$, then with probability at least $1 - 12/n$ $$\|G\|_2 \le 4, \qquad \kappa_V(A + \gamma G) \le \frac{n^2}{\gamma}, \qquad \operatorname{gap}(A + \gamma G) \ge \frac{\gamma^4}{n^5}.$$

Problem. Find a deterministic algorithm and universal constants $C, c, d$ such that, for every $n \ge 2$, every $A \in \mathbb{C}^{n \times n}$ with $\|A\|_2 \le 1$ and every $0 < \delta < 1/2$, the algorithm constructs a matrix $E \in \mathbb{C}^{n \times n}$ with $$\|E\|_2 \le \delta, \qquad A + E \text{ has simple spectrum}, \qquad \frac{\kappa_V(A + E)}{\operatorname{gap}(A + E)} \le C \left(\frac{n}{\delta}\right)^{c},$$ using $O(n^3 \log^d(n/\delta))$ exact arithmetic operations.
