One-dimensionality of monotone Allen–Cahn fronts in dimension five

Let $u \in C^2(\mathbb{R}^5; (-1, 1))$ solve $$-\Delta u = u - u^3 \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^5, \qquad \partial_{x_5} u > 0 \quad \text{everywhere}.$$ De Giorgi conjectured in 1978 that the level sets of every solution of $\Delta u = u^3 - u$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $|u| \le 1$ and $\partial_{x_n} u > 0$ are hyperplanes, at least for $n \le 8$. Ghoussoub and Gui proved this for $n = 2$ and Ambrosio and Cabré for $n = 3$. Savin proved it for $n \le 8$ under the additional assumption $\lim_{x_n \to \pm\infty} u(x', x_n) = \pm 1$, and del Pino, Kowalczyk and Wei constructed counterexamples for every $n \ge 9$. Florit-Simon and Serra proved that stable solutions $u : \mathbb{R}^4 \to (-1, 1)$ with bounded energy density are one-dimensional. In 2026 Liu, Luo, Wang, Wei, Wei and Wu, and also Chan, Fernández-Real, Figalli, Florit-Simon and Serra, proved that bounded stable solutions on $\mathbb{R}^3$ are one-dimensional, which gives the conjecture for $n = 4$.

Problem. Must there exist $a \in \mathbb{R}^5$ with $|a| = 1$ and $a_5 > 0$, and $b \in \mathbb{R}$, such that $$u(x) = \tanh\Bigl(\frac{a \cdot x - b}{\sqrt2}\Bigr) \qquad \text{for every } x \in \mathbb{R}^5?$$ No limits as $x_5 \to \pm\infty$, energy minimization or energy-growth bound is assumed.

Resolution claims

OpenAI

We resolve De Giorgi's conjecture positively in dimension eight: every entire $C^2$ solution $u:\R^8\to(-1,1)$ of $\Delta u=u^3-u$ with an everywhere positive directional derivative is a planar heteroclinic. We prove that every stable solution $v:\R^7\to[-1,1]$ of this equation is a constant well or a planar heteroclinic, without an energy-growth assumption.
